The Storm

It was all over the Internet.  Every news outlet imaginable carried a headline that went something like this, “Biblical Storm Protects Israel.”  Many Youtube headlines proclaimed “…SENT BY GOD…”; each showed the same video of the storm.

What’s all the fuss about?  On Dec. 1, 2016, about 8 am an unusual storm appeared on the Syrian side of Israel’s border in the Golan Heights, just as Israeli soldiers were conducting routine operations on the Israeli side.  The storm, a combination of wind, dust, and rain, did not cross into Israel, but formed a stationary protective barricade against potential attackers.  This is the exact same location where Israeli soldiers had been attacked by ISIS several weeks prior.

Some people attributed the storm to an act of God.  Others simply tried to dismiss it as an “ordinary” weather phenomenon.  But it is rather strange that the storm obeyed a political boundary defined by humans, and did not cross the border fence.  Certainly one would not expect an “ordinary” storm driven by random atmospheric patterns to honor a political boundary.  Tornadoes don’t.  Hurricanes don’t.  Desert dust storms don’t.  Furthermore, storms are not stationary.  They move.  This storm did not.  Clearly this was an extraordinary storm for which no one has presented a cogent scientific explanation.

This storm started me thinking, “What was the root cause?  What happened?” Read more…
