Take an Aspirin…

This is a sequel to the previous post “Message to America.”

The senseless mayhem at the Boston Marathon a few days ago was a gruesome tragedy without doubt.  Our hearts break for those who lost a loved one, those who were maimed, and all their families.   May the Lord give them strength and may His peace beyond understanding speed the healing.

But an even greater tragedy is our national reaction to what happened.  We are lost and unable to comprehend the meaning of this horrific event.  The questions being asked everywhere – even on Christian radio stations – are

  • “Why did this happen?”
  • “How could someone do such a thing?”
  • “How can our family cope with this tragedy?”
  • and so on.

But instead of turning to God for answers and healing, we turn to our “experts”, our psychiatrists and psychologists to sustain us with platitudes and ritual acts to make ourselves feel better, to make the pain disappear.  The focus, however, remains on US, on what WE can do to make OURSELVES feel better.

Let’s just take an aspirin and make the headache go away…

Then there are those who take solace in the way people came to help, how the community pulled together, the acts of love, charity, and bravery.  These are laudable acts and certainly deserve mention.  But again, focusing on these acts is simply another futile attempt by US to make OURSELVES feel better.  The focus remains on US instead of God; in order to make OURSELVES feel better we are fixated on what WE have done.

Let’s just take an aspirin to make the headache go away…

Then our leaders will stand behind a podium and mouth some spiritual words of “prayer” to some vague deities – lest we offend any but the One True God.  Perhaps the words of “prayer” aren’t even directed to any deities, but are merely meaningless spiritual blabber – lest we offend the atheists.  It’s just another futile attempt to make US forget.

Let’s just take an aspirin to make the headache go away…

Finally our leaders will then complement US about how WE as a community have come together to valiantly cope with OUR tragedy and how WE will overcome this tragedy the same way WE have overcome all the other tragedies we’ve experienced of late.  After all, WE have learned through these many recent tragedies to ignore God and press on without Him.  Perhaps the empty words will make US feel better, but the tragedies keep coming.

Let’s just take another aspirin to make the headache go away…

But aspirin does not heal; it merely masks the true illness.  The headaches will continue to return until the root cause of the illness is corrected.  It’s just a short matter of time before the next tragedy; they seem to be occurring with increasing frequency.

That’s the real tragedy:  WE refuse to face reality.  WE feel WE are invincible because WE believe God is on OUR side.  Funny, that’s exactly how the ancient Israelites felt; they were secure in their misconceptions and arrogance and certain of their future based on God’s irrevocable covenantal promises.

The Lord has sent a word against Jacob, and it will fall on Israel; and all the people will know, Ephraim and the inhabitants of Samaria, who say in pride and in arrogance of heart:
“The bricks have fallen, but we will build with dressed stones; the sycamores have been cut down, but we will put cedars in their place.” (Isa 9:8-10)

Then one day, suddenly their world ended.  The Assyrians totally destroyed the northern Kingdom, and the Babylonians demolished Jerusalem and the southern kingdom.  If God did not spare His chosen people, the apple of His eye with whom He had an irrevocable covenant, then He will not spare US who have committed even greater sins and have no covenant from The LORD.  Consider that

  • We have killed over 50 million innocent babies for our personal convenience
  • Many are now advocating infanticide (post-birth abortions) as public policy
  • We relentlessly pursue all kinds of sexual abominations and perversions to fulfill our lustful desires
  • We have traded truth, honesty, virtue, righteousness, and justice for expediency and lies
  • And worst of all, we are banishing the One True God, The LORD God, from our society.
  • Oh, the list is endless and mind-boggling.

Why wonder the cause of tragedies such as Aurora, Newtown, and Boston?  WE ARE THE CAUSE.  WE need to face our own failures; WE need to understand our limitations and obligations; WE ALL need to ask for HELP from the LORD.

Where are our pastors, ministers, and priests leading us to repent?
Where are our political leaders acknowledging the errors of our ways?
Where are the people of God?

As the sound of distant thunder heralds the coming of a storm, so these ever more frequent tragedies herald God’s coming judgment.  Time is running out.

Fall on your knees in repentance and prayer to the LORD like never before.   Ask for national forgiveness and healing for the sins we have committed!  Repent and change your evil ways or be destroyed.  Call on the name of Jesus and He will forgive and heal:

if my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land. (2Ch 7:14)

It’s really that simple.
As Hillsong United sings in “Nothing but the Blood

What can wash away my sin?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus;
What can make me whole again?
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Oh! precious is the flow
That makes me white as snow;
No other fount I know,
Nothing but the blood of Jesus.

Why wait?  Tonight might be too late.
