The Parable of the Weeds

March 30, 2013 1 comment

This post is a follow-up of “The Restaurant”, and contains God’s personal explanation for the continued existence of evil in this world.

This is the explanation provided by Jesus, the Son of God, in the form of a parable:

The kingdom of heaven is like a man who sowed good seed in his field.  But while everyone was sleeping, his enemy came and sowed weeds among the wheat, and went away.  When the wheat sprouted and formed heads, then the weeds also appeared.

The owner’s servants came to him and said, “Sir, didn’t you sow good seed in your field? Where then did the weeds come from?”
“An enemy did this,” he replied.
The servants asked him, “Do you want us to go and pull them up?”
“No,” he answered, “because while you are pulling the weeds, you may root up the wheat with them.  Let both grow together until the harvest. At that time I will tell the harvesters: First collect the weeds and tie them in bundles to be burned; then gather the wheat and bring it into my barn.”  (Mat 13:24-30)

Jesus subsequently interprets the parable:

He answered, “The one who sowed the good seed is the Son of Man.  The field is the world, and the good seed stands for the sons of the kingdom. The weeds are the sons of the evil one, and the enemy who sows them is the devil.

The harvest is the end of the age, and the harvesters are angels.  As the weeds are pulled up and burned in the fire, so it will be at the end of the age.  The Son of Man will send out his angels, and they will weed out of his kingdom everything that causes sin and all who do evil.  They will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

Then the righteous will shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him hear.  (Mat 13:37-43)

God wants to share His eternal joy and fellowship forever in Heaven with all men.  That’s why He created mankind in the first place and sowed the good seed.  But the enemy corrupted the field through evil.  God could destroy all evil today, but doing so might create the potential of some people being denied an opportunity for eternal joy and fellowship in Heaven with God.  Therefore God chooses to wait until the fullness of time to judge and destroy evil, lest He miss one soul.

God demonstrated this same exact characteristic in the case of Sodom.  God decided to destroy Sodom, but Abraham negotiated with God who agreed to not destroy the city if even 10 righteous people could be found. (Gen 18:23-33) Of course 10 righteous people could not be found in the city, and the city was destroyed.

Now consider this:  If God had judged all evil 200 years ago then you, the reader, would not have been born and would not have been given the opportunity to obtain a blessing of eternal life in Heaven.  God is holding back His judgment because He wanted YOU to have that opportunity!

The Bad News

In Heaven everyone will have such an intimate relationship with God that eternity in Heaven would be unbearable for anyone who doesn’t love Him.  Jesus describes this intimate relationship as

… I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. (Joh 14:20)

Jesus also states unequivocally that He is God in the flesh:

Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you so long, and you still do not know me, Philip? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? (Joh 14:9)

Therefore eternity in Heaven would be unbearable for all who reject Jesus Christ now, and God – through Jesus – will graciously oblige those people by keeping them out of Heaven.  After all, they rejected God himself when they rejected Jesus Christ.  Hence eternity in their company would be unbearable!

The bad news is that the only available alternative to Heaven is eternal weeping and gnashing of teeth in Hell.  Furthermore, because of our sinful nature we are all automatically excluded from Heaven and destined for Hell – unless some action is taken now.  Moreover there is nothing we can do about it ourselves because everything we offer to God is like filthy rags.  (Isa 64:6)

The Good News

But all is not lost.  There is Good News:  Jesus Christ graciously and freely offers everyone an opportunity to join Him in Heaven.  Everyone is eligible, no matter what evil acts one has committed.  All one has to do is

  • Make a personal choice to repent and turn from evil ways,
  • Believe that Jesus speaks the truth, is who He claims to be, and
  • Have faith that He will make good on His promises.

He does the rest.  It’s that simple.  Now that is Good News, indeed!

So, what’s keeping you from repentance and Jesus?  There is no better time than right now.

Social Insanities

Some examples of social insanity follow:

American Student Punished for Refusing to Recite Mexican Pledge of Allegiance

Whose citizens are we, anyway? Mexico or USA? Apparently Mexico…

The Gender Mess in Massachusetts

Massachusetts requires K-12 public schools to allow boys and girls to use the opposite sex’s locker rooms, bathrooms, and changing facilities as long as they claim to identify with that gender.  What were they thinking?

Is Scripture quoting sign that you’re nuts?

This is what happens when good becomes bad and bad becomes good. Hollywood predominantly displays Christian believers as insane.
But who is really the insane one?

Greenspan: Ignore The Economy, “Only The Stock Market Matters”

Unemployment apparently doesn’t matter.  Real inflation apparently doesn’t matter.  Our fiscal health apparently doesn’t matter.
Sounds like Greenspan has put the cart before the horse.
Does the stock market drive the economy, or is the stock market just a measure of the economy?

… and much more to come, for all is not as it looks!

Root Cause

Insanity is a lack of “good sense and soundness of judgment” (sanity) required to survive by discerning reality from unreality.  Therefore a continuing state of impaired self-awareness and self-delusion, a state of the willful denial of reality, is a form of insanity:

Impaired self-awareness denies the true nature (reality) of one’s existence; it is self-delusion.  However, self-delusion also may include denial of the true nature of the external world (reality) in which one exists.

In both instances – whether the self-delusion is internal or external – the root cause of all insanity is rejection of the truth and reality (reality being a component of the truth).  Note that it is immaterial whether such rejection occurs due to lack of ability or knowledge, or due to a willful decision:  The end result is the same insanity.

Therefore insanity at its core is a state of being in conflict with the truth – due to rejection of the truth.  Although insanity manifests itself in many different forms, all expressions of insanity share the same common root cause:  Rejection of the truth. Read more…

Many individuals complain about God. They say, “God doesn’t really give me a real choice. On the one hand is eternity in Heaven, on the other is eternity in Hell. The two options He gives me are such ridiculously polar opposites that Hell isn’t even a realistic choice. It’s not a true choice. Only a controlling, power-crazed God would force such a ridiculous choice on people.”

Predictably Irrational

This is a book review and commentary on “Predictably Irrational – The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions” Dan Ariely.
Great book.  Recommended reading.

In his fascinating book, “Predictably Irrational – The Hidden Forces That Shape Our Decisions” Dan Ariely scientifically documents our flawed human decision-making process.  His focus is primarily a new field of research called behavioral economics.  He empirically examines individuals’ decision-making processes related to a wide range of issues with implications far beyond mere economics; some of the more provocative topics are listed below:

  • The Cost of Zero Cost
    • Why we often pay too much when we pay nothing
  • The Cost of Social Norms
    • Why we are happy to do things, but not when we are paid to do them
  • The Influence of [sexual] arousal and passion
    • Why sound decision-making is abandoned by the emotions of the moment
  • The effect of expectations
    • Why a person gets what he expects
  • The nature of our character

Support Pastor Saeed

Counter-CutPastor Saeed Abedini, an American citizen, was sentenced a month ago to eight years of imprisonment in Iran’s infamous Evin Prison because he failed to recant his Christian beliefs.  (He had already been imprisoned by Iranian authorities for 4 months prior to his trial and “conviction.”)  At first the Obama Administration ignored the matter entirely, but of late has made several demands for his release.

It is said that no one leaves Evin Prison alive, and for the past month no one had been able to contact him or find out if he was still alive.  Please pray for Pastor Saeed.  You may also choose to join the campaign for his release and sign the petition at

A letter has recently been received from Pastor Saeed.

In this letter he recounts his torture and failing health.  But he has not recanted his faith and closes his letter with the following words of worship and prayer:

It is during these harsh conditions, that I deeply need God’s Saving Grace so that I can be the fragrant scent of Christ in the dark house of Evin prison. I have often seen the Shining Morning Star in the darkness of this prison and I have seen His amazing and supernatural works. Oh, how beautiful is seeing the light of the Shining Morning Star of Christ in such evil darkness.

  • See your golden opportunities in pressures and difficulties.
  • See the Shining Morning Star in the dark times of your life.

I Love Him! He is Gracious, Merciful, and Righteous to me. I now know that I have not been forgotten and that we are together in this path. God gives me Grace.

This is my message for the Church: Stay Strong for His Glory. He will come back soon! Be with God and give your best efforts for His kingdom.

Pastor Saeed, servant of Jesus Christ in chains for endurance of Gospel. I love you all.

Could we all be such faithful followers of Christ Jesus! May we never fail to give glory to Jesus!
Please pray for Pastor Saeed.
