Counter-CutLast week the U.N. voted 138 to 9 to upgrade the Palestinian Authority’s status from “entity” to “non-member state”.  This happened in spite of the Palestinian Authority’s continuing commitment to the destruction and appropriation of Israel’s territory, Israel’s opposition to the measure before the U.N, and the fact that Palestine has never been a people or a viable state.

In fact, Palestine cannot survive without Israeli life support and huge amounts of global welfare.  For example, Palestinians get their electricity from Israel, but owe $200 million in unpaid electric bills to Israel in spite of receiving about $1 billion annually in foreign aid.

When the votes were counted, 138 countries voted in favor, 9 opposed, and 41 abstained.
Here is a listing of how each country voted:

One of the most interesting elements of this resolution is that it specifically requires the withdrawal of Israel from Jerusalem, citing the Palestinians’ “inalienable rights” to the city as justification:

… the need for the withdrawal of Israel from the Palestinian territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem…

The U.N. resolution is in reality nothing more than a poorly veiled attempt to delegitimize and destroy the modern state of Israel through political means, having failed to do so militarily.  For the full text of the U.N. resolution, click here.

Actually, the vote is not surprising.   It was predicted by the prophet Zecheriah 2,600 years ago and is yet another sign that we are nearing Biblical end times[1] (Key text has been highlighted in bold):

The burden of the word of the LORD concerning Israel: Thus declares the LORD, who stretched out the heavens and founded the earth and formed the spirit of man within him:

Behold, I am about to make Jerusalem a cup of staggering to all the surrounding peoples. The siege of Jerusalem will also be against Judah.

On that day I will make Jerusalem a heavy stone for all the peoples. All who lift it will surely hurt themselves. And all the nations of the earth will gather against it.

On that day, declares the LORD, I will strike every horse with panic, and its rider with madness. But for the sake of the house of Judah I will keep my eyes open, when I strike every horse of the peoples with blindness.

Then the clans of Judah shall say to themselves, ‘The inhabitants of Jerusalem have strength through the LORD of hosts, their God.’

On that day I will make the clans of Judah like a blazing pot in the midst of wood, like a flaming torch among sheaves. And they shall devour to the right and to the left all the surrounding peoples, while Jerusalem shall again be inhabited in its place, in Jerusalem.

“And the LORD will give salvation to the tents of Judah first, that the glory of the house of David and the glory of the inhabitants of Jerusalem may not surpass that of Judah.

On that day the LORD will protect the inhabitants of Jerusalem, so that the feeblest among them on that day shall be like David, and the house of David shall be like God, like the angel of the LORD, going before them.

And on that day I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.

“And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and pleas for mercy, so that, when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child, and weep bitterly over him, as one weeps over a firstborn.[2] (Zec 12:1-10)

Zecheriah perfectly predicted today’s events in the Middle East:

  • Palestinians continuously rain rockets on and constantly besiege Israel.
  • Palestinians deny Israel’s right to exist and try by all means possible to eradicate her.
  • The world vainly seeks a compromise solution, but none is in sight.
  • All nations openly support and promote the Palestinian cause against Israel.
  • Yet, with God’s support and blessings, Israel continues to press on and flourish.

The Bible teaches us that the foolishness of God is wiser than men (1Co 1:25), and that God’s will be done – no matter what man desires or plans.  And God’s plan is simple:  “the house of David shall be like God, like the angel of the LORD, [ie. Christ Jesus] going before them.”  Therefore all might be wise to follow Gamaliel’s advice to the Sanhedrin,

“So in the present case I tell you, keep away from these men and let them alone, for if this plan or this undertaking [modern Israel] is of man, it will fail; but if it is of God, you will not be able to overthrow them. You might even be found opposing God!” (Act 5:38-39)

Let U.N. votes pour forth for naught!
Let Americans and Europeans bluster and condemn Israel’s right to build on their own land!
Let the whole world blindly pursue a two-state solution in vain!
Let the Palestinians and Arabs rain rockets on Israel in futility.

The LORD Jesus has spoken and it shall be so:  Israel will surely stand in the land and her enemies all around shall surely fall.

All is not as it looks

[1] The book of Zecheriah was written after the Hebrews’ return from the Babylonian exile; therefore it must refer to the subsequent exile that started with the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 AD and ended with the formation of modern Israel in 1948.

[2] Note the clear reference to the crucified LORD, Jesus Christ,  “when they look on me, on him whom they have pierced, they shall mourn for him, as one mourns for an only child” – written 600 years before Christ’s crucifixion.
